Torpedo... LOS!

"Torpedo... LOS!" (German, "Torpedo... AWAY!")
is one of the iconic works of celebrated pop artist
Roy Lichtenstein (1923-1997), who is noted for his
comicbook-inspired panels, among others. I took this
photo last weekend at the Chicago Art Institute's

Lichtenstein retrospective, which runs till September.

The august black Torpedo 18 beside its flamboyant, pimped sibling, which I call "The Groovy Typer formerly known as Torpedo." To me, the purple-rained Torpedo is Richard's subconscious tribute to "The Artist formerly known as Prince."

Professor Polt: one of the few men on the planet who will never be at a loss for something beautiful to type on. (:

Quite a contrast there. The Purple Prose Producer will always be one of the greatest typewriters I have seen. I mean, c'mon, a purple platen? Hell yes!

Very nice typewriters.

@Ted, you said it. It's amazing though that this Torpedo stood out for me among so many impressive typers from his collection that I've seen and tested. Unbelievable. It's no wonder that Richard ranks this among his top favorites for serious writing.

@Ken, agree! But I wish you had the chance to type on the black Torpedo, man, the feel just blew me away.

@Bill, @Luis, they are indeed!

I'm glad you have been introduced to the way of the Torpedo. So snappy! I recently picked up one with the script typeface (cream and blue/grey). Unfortunately, I have not been able to experience one with a new platen. That would be amazing.

I love the photo of the purple and black side by side. And I love the Prince reference. Yesterday I did my Paul Simon thing. :)

A Torpedo is on my short list. I've never seen one in all black. Very sleek.

Did you try them both? I'm interested to know how the shrink tupe felt to type on.

Ah yes, Torpedos are superb when they're in good condition.

@Ted, a beautiful writing machine simply inspires one to write, doesn't it?

@Dwayne, yes, it is snappy indeed. It also has a solid feel. Great that you got a cursive Torpedo!

@Dana, isn't the Prince reference apt. ( :

@Deek, I've never seen one in black either. I did see one in mustard yellow, very attractive.

@Peter, I did. I felt a bit of thickness in the purple platen when the keys hit. Not bad at all, but the black's just perfect.

@Richard, amen to your reply to Ted!
