Faux bois, real vintage

The perfect archive box for my typecasts.
I'm curious, do you file yours?

Get a load of this, guys- my 70's Deco-Tel rotary phone with a retractable cord, a gold dial framed on a faux bois panel, plus its own handsome leather-and-wood(real) cigar box case. It's total James Bond. An awesome friend gave this to me as a gift, he found it in an antique shop in New Buffalo, Michigan. Speaking of New Buffalo, that's a great town to visit for vintage and antiques.

And Japan-made 70's Royal Caravan makes three. If you haven't seen this baby before, re-visit: I dream faux bois typewriter

Does the phone work?
Of course it does.
If you'll excuse me,
I've got to make a call.

You've got a Deco-Tel... Awesome! I've been chasing a decent dial unit for my telephone collection. (I don't collect any touch-tone phones. All dials. And only desk phones).

Love your setup there. It's just great.

Very nice post. 007 would be proud of your phone.

Pretty cool, I must admit, even if I'm not generally fond of the design era I grew up in. (I did love my clock radio with faux bois accents, but mostly for the local station that played Big Band oldies!)

I keep my typecasts in a small artist's portfolio with plastic sleeves.

Your telephone! I love it! Wood motifs are just sooo 70s, aren't they? My great-grandparents built the house my great-grandma still lives in in the 70s and the den has white-painted nobbly wood paneling (with gold accents!) and the dining room has that diagonal wood paneling that practically every 70s house had. It's only missing a rock wall!

@Scott, you have a rotary phone collection? So when are you going to post about them? I just have one other phone, the iconic red phone.

@BIll, makes me want to check out the earlier Sean Connery titles like Goldfinger.

@Richard, my dad used to have a lot of faux bois office desk stuff, if I only knew that 30 years later, I'll be collecting them. That portfolio of yours must be bursting at the seams!

@Lauren, thanks! Lol, a rock wall indeed!

That false-wood look remembers me of some old electric keyboards/organs...

Your faux bois collection is lovely. I don't recall ever having seen a faux bois typewriter, and that phone is fantastic!

That phone is amazing. Always wanted a rotary phone. Even more awesome that you can take it anywhere.

I'm still on the lookout for a rotary phone. Your's is pretty darn cool.

I do file all my typecasts, but by file, I mean put them in a desk drawer. They are all there (over three year's worth) and mostly in order, but not organized past that. Since all the scans are hosted on my personal site, I also have all of those in a directory.

All the letters I have are in an accordion file (over three year's worth there, too), so they are organized a little better!

I remember the televisions from the 1980s that used simulated wood grain, a transitional period between real wooden cabinets and the molded black plastic boxes of today.

I tape my small typecast sheets to standard sized printer paper sheets, then hole punch and store in 3-ring binders.

@tr0x, yeah, I know what you mean. I've seen those.

@Dana, would you believe there's a version of that faux bois typewriter with a built-in AM radio?

@Vikram, rotary phones have a lot of personality.

@Deek, good to see you here, welcome. Wow, three years' worth is a lot!

@Joe V., welcome here. My grandparents had a TV like that. Your filing system seems so neat and organized, good for you.

I saw a phone very similar to that in an antique store once. I played with it for literally five to ten minutes (that retractable cord is so neat). I hope they are displayed together to show off their appeal. :)

I still like false wood (and that must be evident in the pictures on my blog). That telephone is fantastic, and the typewriter looks very interesting!

Ton S. (I dream lo-tech) said...

@Ken, good idea, let's see if I can find space.

@Miguel, I'll have to scrutinize your posts, I don't think I notice other things when you feature such amazing typewriters like the red Lettera 30 or Remington 25.

Nice, Ton! I bet Miss Moneypenny's been calling you all week!

Ton S. (I dream lo-tech) said...

@teeritz, what a surprise. Not.
I had to google "Miss Moneypenny;" I've yet to see the early Bond films, and it was my dad who read Ian Fleming. But I'm all set to see Goldfinger soon.

"Goldfinger" is a good one to start with. I highly recommend "From Russia With Love", perhaps the best Bond film ever made, IMHO.
And speaking of phones, I have about six old rotary dial models. Only three of them work well enough to make actual calls with. Looks like I'll have to put a short post up sometime soon.

Scott Kernaghan said...

I concur. From russia with love is the A grade material.

Scott Kernaghan said...

And do tell me about these phones!

Ton S. (I dream lo-tech) said...

Okay, 2 votes. I'll watch "From Russia..."

Fabulous post. You will have everyone wanting to get these. Wonderful!

The Royal is perfectly camouflaged on the wooden table.

Is anyone else getting an awful lot of spam from this posting? I feel discussions of 'wood' have triggered the responses of a few thousand spam-bots.

Ton S. (I dream lo-tech) said...

@Rae, thanks!

@shordzi, who would have thought it was faux.

@Scott, geez, I hope your 'feeling' is wrong. I , for one, haven't gotten any.

haha what an awesome telephone, must be a nice change from the ever more distracting "smart phone"....

@b.c., funny, I don't even have a smart phone, mine's an extinct lo-tech "clamshell." Lol
